about the studio The Fin Studio is the home for the work of art director, photographer and gen x & y brand strategist Jim McGinley. The name comes from the simple definition of the word: Fin (noun) provides balance, aesthetic, and direction. about jim mcginley I work with publishers, editors, project managers, developers, marketing + team managers, and agency creative directors in a top-down approach to connect them, their brand, or their client's with the elusive gen x & y segment. My strengths, connections, and interests are centered within this segment with a view towards social and environmental ethics, counter-culture aesthetic, and contemporary artistic direction. Just like the name implies by definition - I believe any good design or strategy, no matter what the medium or market, is a carefully crafted recipe of balance, aesthetic, and direction. Prior to my creative + strategy work I flew for the United States Coast Guard as a rescue helicopter crew chief for 12 years. It was here I learned the valued skills of attention to detail, execution, goals - and maybe most importantly - the ability to perform risk vs. gain - a valuable tool whether you are saving lives at sea - or designing an over-arching brand strategy. | current I am currently the Founding Director of Drift Surfing North America directing the global strategy, business development, and creative direction. Along with Drift I am also a founding partner in Corduroy, a hip, surf inspired boutique + art gallery located in Portland, Maine.
